History of
Calvary Gospel Tabernacle
Calvary Gospel Tabernacle
was founded in 1951 by the late Rev. Dexter H. McMahon and his wife
Glendoline. The original church was located at 2408 Potomac Ave. in
Bakersfield, CA.
They started out with a tent
on what is now the parking lot then later built the church building. They
pastored there until their resignation in the late 1960s.
After a Church split one
year later, Bro & Sis McMahon founded another Church known as Full Gospel
Lighthouse located at 800 Butte St, Bakersfield, CA. After a few years
the name and corporation of Calvary Gospel Tabernacle was handed back
over to Rev McMahon.
The corporation remained
active but unused until 2005, where Rev. McMahon handed the corporation to
Rev William Underwood; William attended the original Calvary Gospel
Tabernacle
as a child and Full Gospel
Lighthouse as a teen and young adult and his father was one of the
original board members of both Churches.

Rev. William Underwood
and wife Sharon began a new work under the corporation later that year,
holding services at the home of one of the deacons, and then renting a
building on Morning Drive in Bakersfield, CA.
In November 2006, they
moved to their current location of 424 Sterling Road, Bakersfield, CA
which was formerly Hope Tabernacle.
Rev. Dexter H McMahon
past away in 2006 just shortly after the Church moved to its current
location. Sister Glendoline currently attends Calvary Gospel Tabernacle
as does some of the original Church members. Rev. William Underwood’s
father still serves as a member of the board today.
